More and More Arrests and Violations in Jordan
Report by: Dr. Hisham Bustani - Libirties Committee of the Union of Professional Associations

Thursday, November 1, 2001 :
On Tuesday, October 23, 2001, a demonstration that erupted in support of Afghanistan, and against the US agression, marched peacefully through Jordan University, without any violence or clashes of any kind with police and or campus security. The march did not leave the boundaries of the university.

The very next day, ie. Wednesdsay 24/10, a large group of campus guards attacked fiercefully with clubs a small group of student activists who were held responsible for the march that took place the day before.

Three of the students were admitted to hospital as a result of sustaining heavy injuries, those are: Obada Heiari, Anas Abu-Khdeir, and Ibrahim Zgoul.

Hours after this incident, a police force arrested the three hospetalized students, forced them to abstain medical care, and held them at the Sweileh Police Station prison, where they still are until now.

Also, the three students arrested about a month ago following the march marking the first anniversary of the Intifada, are still being held in the General Intelligence Department (Mukhabarat). Those are: Othman Zuhdi, Moh'md Abu-Mallouh, Na'el Abu-Shaheen.

Many of those arrested in Baq'a for the same charge (marching for the Intifada), also a month ago, are still in the custody of the Mukhabarat. Those are: Moh'md Khaleel Akel, Kazem Ayesh, Naser Sarisi, Omar Diab, Salameh Da'das, Thayer Al-Bado.

It should be mentioned that some of the Baq'a detainees were released lately, without being charged, those are: Hani Mansi, Zaid Motawi', Laith Asaad, Basel Arar, Awni Shatarat, Fadi Adel, and Husien Wishah.

Please send letters to condemn the actions of the government and to demand the release of those arrested to the following addresses, it will be appreciated if you forwarded us a copy of your letter.
